Audio and Video Codecs

Hello everyone.

Having a look through most of the posts being made within the forum quite a lot of problems are due to codecs. Please make sure you have the right codecs (both audio and video) before making a post within the forum.

There are two main codec packs for Vista (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) which have all the required codecs which are needed for a successful conversion. The URLs below will direct you to the website both the codec packs can be downloaded from.

Please remember to remove all existing codecs before installing the packs, if you do not it could lead to compatibility issues.

Vista Codec Pack (32-bit) - Here

Vista Codec Pack (64-bit) - Here

Also be aware that Vista 64-bit uses the 32-bit player as default, you will need to change this for the 64-bit codecs to work. Also installing both packs might solve this problem but might lead to compatibility issues.

You say to.... "Please remember to remove all existing codecs before installing the packs, if you do not it could lead to compatibility issues."....

Are you referring to the codecs that came with Vista, or just 3rd party packs added after the installation of the operating system? What steps would one take in Vista to remove them? The normal software uninstall of 3rd party packs?

Does your recommended package have an uninstall feature that totally removes it? Is it free of adware and spyware?

I mean remove all 3rd party codecs through the normal remove options.

And yes the recommended codec pack is free of adware and spyware, it is one of the most highly recommended codec packs around.

I tried to install this codec and I'm getting an unidentified error when I try to run it.  I uninstalled all 3rd party codecs already.  This is the most frustrating thingI have ever encountered!  I'm going to switch to a mac

To tell the truth, I don't like codec packs. Could you specify what codecs do I need to get this thing work? I have ffdshow and I guess that if Windows Media Player can play my video I want to burn, it should work.

I totally agree. This support sucks. I get an error when I use the dvd maker. I get told codecs are the problem. I try to download them and I get another error! I think microsoft needs to debug this stuff before they get it out. They'd have a lot less pissed off people ranting on here. Microsoft is really not on top of it here.

The URL you linked to lists the Codecs OS as XP 64bit, not Vista. Not sure if that's a typo but worth mentioning.

Also, could you comment on these codecs?
