Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I tried your suggestion and it worked.

I went into Windows Movie Maker, Tools, Options, clicked on the Compatibility Tab and unchecked AVI decompressor, which is what Windows DVD maker was using to compress and decode my avi file to put on the DVD, and then I closed the program.

After doing that, my Windows DVD maker worked just fine.

    Thanks for the info.

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I just got my new laptop about 1 month ago and have downloaded some movies I was able to burn about 10 -15 movies mostly AVI files with no problem I also was able to burn several mpg and xvid  but all of the sudden I can't get anything to burn I get the Windows DVD Maker has stopped working to show up then when i check online for problems it says something about dep something or other. I'm not really all that great on computers can usually fix a problem but i'm stumped. I love this program and really would like to continue using it but i need a fix i've read some other post and tried going to movie maker and unchecking nero files and the avi decompression i have installed codec pakages can that be the problem? i am sooo frustrated I can't even get past the add file page most of the time and if i do the program shuts down before the preview even starts. somebody please help me before i go insane.

    seemebreakthis:

I had the same problem - DVD maker was working initially, but after some point it would not work anymore (the 'stopped working' message).

I found out by coincidence you actually have to adjust some settings in Windows Movie Maker in order to fix the problem.  Apparently Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker are related somehow.

In Windows Movie Maker, go to Tools -> Options, and search for the tab where it lists the decoders installed on your machine.  Uncheck the ones unrelated to Windows DVD Maker (in my case the Nero decoders).

    My problem was gone.

    Semebreakthis,

I just wanted to thank you for your spot on advice.  You are a life saver!  I have been frustrated by this problem for over a year.  I gave up on it and just started trying to research it again,  Microsoft doesn't have crap about this subject.  Maybe you can advise them that they are idiots!

Thanks Again and Happy New Year!

    Sincerely,

    Chuck Manetta

It worked for you? I tried taking off several parts in the list, but I can't figure out which ones turned off work. My codec pack was CCCP and some basic codecs are there as well. Which did you remove?

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I received the same error, I think the problem was caused by an automatic update that Vista sent out, you see Vista was made with high security in mind and so it interferes with normal functionality with some installed programs' like copying and playing flashes, and copying dvds.  And after trying all the suggested fixes: typing -r in the regestry in order to remove the read only option from the temp folder, to moving the windows dvd maker program to another drive, to downloading the latest drivers, but all to no avail. So I finally decided to install a software VideoDVDMaker, and now I am able to burn DVDs again.

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

Solution found: After burning a DVD the program adapts a certain format for the next one. If your file is in PAL and the preveious one was NCTS (sp) then it wont work. To avoid this I use a codec converter program first, like Replay Converter http://www.applian.com/replay-converter/

I convert all my files for the DVD into the same format. I am using avi(MPEG 4) and then the Windows DvD burner works fine. This also solves the problem for other burners like Nero etc, none of which would work for me before the conversion. Hope this helps
