Project file saved with MP3 from external hard drive, now it won't open

My girlfriend made a DVD Maker slide show with a single MP3 file on an external hard drive and all of the pictures on the laptop's hard drive.  Now, when she tries to reopen the saved "project", it gives an error about not being able to find the file and it doesn't even open (why can't it just open without the single file missing?).  I know Vista has a db file system, and I'm wondering if it recategorizes the hard drive every time it connects.  And I borrowed the external hard drive and added a few files to it in between her saving and trying to open the project file.  Is there anything to do to salvage it?
