Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

    Hello All,

Ever since I've upgraded to Windows Vista, I've never been able to burn a DVD using Windows DVD Maker on my (Internal) HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H22N ATA DVD burner.

I've tried unchecking all Nero affiliated decoders in Windows Movie Maker.... and still cannot get Windows DVD Maker to recognize my DVD burner.

Pls help. Also pls advise how I could upload screenshots to help pinpoint my concern.

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

I have the same problem. It encodes my video, burns it, and then says it's finished at 99% then gives me a "cannot burn" error, letting me know I just wasted a dvd. Is this a software problem that microsoft will have to just fix in the future?

I'm using an lg dvd burner with sony dvd-r dvds.

Can either or both of you cut and paste the windows event viewier error message? This sounds similar to a problem I have just overcome....

    Thanks,

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

I have exactly thge same problem. Windows Vista Home Premium and tried to use Windows DVD maker but the little box top right does not show any frives (just blank) and when I try to burn my movie, I get an error message stating that Windows cannot find a DVD burner.

I obviously DO have a DVD-RW drive as this appears as such in My Computer and also in device manager. Tried to update drivers but all up to date. Changed region to Region 2, rebooted etc etc

    Any suggestions gratefully received

    Jon

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

I had the exact same problem when there is not a good DVD-R in the drive.

I put a clean DVD-R into the drive rebooted and this fixed the problem.

Make sure you have the right specifications and also that you have the latest firmware for your DVD-RW drive.

Also try playing a movie in the drive before you open Windows DVD Maker up, this will acknowlege that there is a DVD-RW drive connected to the computer.

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

I'm finding the same problems with the same drive..

The drive works with other burning software without issue.

I've checked everything I've found on the Internet about this:

    - checked the regestry for filters even though that's just for cases where the drive doesn't show up at all for any program.

    - firmware was upgraded back when I first got the system

    - tried lots of different media

    - tried booting up with media in place

    - tried playing a movie right before trying to burn

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

Ultimately, what I want is to create a DVD using the Sports theme.

If there's a way to do that with other DVD creation/burning software, I'd just do that.... :)

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

All i can suggest is that your burner is not compatible with Vista.

Try re-installing Vista and see if that helps but thats the only option i can suggest.

Or go out and buy another DVD-RW.

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

Hi to all undetected DVD burner users,

I too have all the exact same issues as the users above. New PC -top spec, Vista 32bit OEM, DVD-RW is a Pioneer DVR-112D.

It runs perfect, except Windows DVD maker, I too cannot select a Burner from the blank drop down list. I have tried all of the above suggestions to no avail.

Windows has some really good software this time the Windows movie maker is really easy to use with an excellent presentation, Windows DVD maker looks great but...

I fear the solution is not to go out and but a new DVD-RW, who knows if it will be compatible.

Can anybody help??  Did anybody above fix the problem, if so how? Microsoft are offering to charge me $60 p/hour to try assist!! Hmmm!

    Later

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

I agree 100%. Why buy something new? I have this exact problem too, and there has got to be a solution? Please, if anyone finds out how to solve it, post the solution here.
    Thanks

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

This is clearly a common problem that needs to be addressed.  I spent hours preparing a Windows Movie Maker slideshow for the family on my brand new PC (Vista) only to find Windows DVD maker will not recognise the LG burner.  I have tested the burner with nero and it works fine!  I have downloaded the latest drivers for the DVD drive but nothing has changed.

I like the Movie Maker software but it is useless if I can't convert my work to a DVD.

I also tried uninstalling NERO which also didn't work...

    Please fix this problem.

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

I have this problem with LG GSA-H42L.

If some drives are not compatible with WDVDM and the solution is to buy one that is, a compatibility list wouldn't go amiss.

In my view, if the OS supports it, there is no reason for WDVDM no to.  It is a bug.

I had this problem from when I first installed Vista so it is not a burning software conflict.  My solution to resolve this problem was to stick Nero on my PC and burn using that.  It works fine.  If MS want their customers to use Nero instead of their product, so be it.  We will.

Re: Windows DVD Maker doesn't recognize my DVD burner

Hi guys I had the same problem with you and I found a solution, at least it's working for me so I thought to share it.
The problem had to do with the Jmicron controller of my mobo. So whoever has installed the official driver of jmicron 36x should roll it back to microsoft's.
DVD maker regognized instantly my plextor.
