Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I just bought a new computer that came with Vista, Windows Movie Maker and DVD Maker.  I uploaded my video, put it together in Movie Maker, and attempt to burn.  It states that it is sending it to the DVD Maker.  Everything looks great - the video clip is there, to burn to drive E.  When I click the NEXT button, I get the error "Windows DVD Maker has stopped working" and it states that windows is looking for a solution.  The program then closes down.

I just want to burn to a DVD for grandparents to view.

I attempted to change the clock, but that didn't work!  :(

If this isn't going to work, can someone recommend a reasonably price program that is easy to use?  I recently bought Rosio Easy Media Creator, but cannot load onto Vista (incompatable).  The Roxio Creator Basic v9 program that came preloaded is just a preview, and will not burn DVDs.

    Hello,

I've heard of this problem before.
What video files are you using? .WMV, .AVI etc...

I've only got one outta 20 DVD's working with DVD Maker, so I think we can expect a Service Pack soon! ;)

    EDIT:

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I was using the .avi file type.  I did a little reading last time I turned a home video into a DVD and thought this was the best to share, since I need to have it play on other DVD Players.  Is this correct?

The only other time I did this was prior to Vista and used Roxio Media Creator.

    Thanks!

    Sandy

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I had the exact same problem as you. I think it is a file type problem and I will be testing different types tonight. When I tried to test the  .wmv clips for dvd burning they worked just fine, but it was those pesky .Avi files that stopped   WDM in it's tracks. I will test it on .mpg and as many other  video types to dtermine if it's just .avi.

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I am having the same kind of random trouble with this program! I was able to make 2 DVD's but now it gets to about 0.5% in burning and states "Unspecified error" it doesn't even start to burn to the actual DVD.. I have tried other disks, other files etc and to no avail it appears it has just decided to cease all functionality!

If anyone has any help please let me know!

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

    Hello JudgeOC:

I experienced the same thing.  What happens is that you cannot burn a project to a dvd.  An easy way to know whether your file is a project, is my looking at what type of file it is.  If you right click on the project you created and it has the extension .mswmm., then you know it's not a movie file.  When you save your movie don't save it as a project.  A project file allows you to go back to it and make changes.  I know it sounds hard to understand but only burn files that show up as a filmstrip instead of a document icon.  A .MSWMM file is a Windows Movie Maker project file. By saving the project, it allows you to return to the movie and make modifications at a later time. However, if you're satisfied with the movie and would like to upload and share the result  you will need to choose "Save Movie File" under the "File" menu (which is different from "Save Project", which creates the .MSWMM.  Remember save it a movie file.

    I hope this helps

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I am having exactly the same problem as you and it is driving me up the wall.  I have an HP, I have contacted them and the "geek squad" neither helped, but for 129 dollars they'd send someone out to help, and to top it off it's too late to get a service plan! GRRR!

I havent tried Roxio, but I've been thinking about Roxio 9, but I've read some bad reviews on Amazon.... Plus if the freaking program that CAME with the computer doesnt work, what do I do if the one I buy doesnt? I already bought Pinnacle Studio 10 and they are working on a patch, and have a beta version out,  but im haveing problems downloading it through my dial up service.. (it timed out after 6 hrs and 75% downloaded!)

I got WDVDM to burn one DVD. ONE DVD! why isnt it working now?

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I had the same problem - DVD maker was working initially, but after some point it would not work anymore (the 'stopped working' message).

I found out by coincidence you actually have to adjust some settings in Windows Movie Maker in order to fix the problem.  Apparently Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker are related somehow.

In Windows Movie Maker, go to Tools -> Options, and search for the tab where it lists the decoders installed on your machine.  Uncheck the ones unrelated to Windows DVD Maker (in my case the Nero decoders).

    My problem was gone.

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I to have been hit with Micosofts buggy Dvd Maker. I have successfully burned 2 dvds, but now when I try to add an avi file it stops working. Makes me wonder....if they can't get a simple dvd burning program to work, what makes them think they can make an entire operating system to work properly? Is it a sign of things to come? Lets hope not.

Re: Windows DVD Maker has stopped working.... HELP Please

I FOUND A SOLUTION! (At least for me!)

It has to do with two other posts that helped me figure it out... Someone suggested saving the movie as something other than a project... and someone else pointed out that that was not an option... but you can PUBLISH the movie to your computer as a different file!!!! I used the AVI and am burining it with my patched Pinnacle Studio 10!!! (i didnt even bother trying the windows dvd maker yet... I will though, later... I'm just not on speaking terms with it right now... need time to heal.... ;)

    Hope this helps somebody!!!
