generating and burning takes a long time - can I speed it up or split the process into 2

Given that it takes an incredibly long time (4hrs to burn a 2 hr DVD), are there any ways of shortening the process. 2 possibilities come to mind:

    1) Persuading DVD maker to write the DVD information to disk and then to burn the information from the file it has generated
    2) Converting the video from AVI to MPEG2 (or some other format), so that there is less conversion to do when burning.

Does anyone know if (1) is possible or if (2) actually works (and if so, what the best format is?)

    Thanks
